Born in this country of Italian mother and Polish father Carlo's parents came to the United Kingdom after the second world war. In his early years Carlo spent most of his childhood in Polish camps and could only speak Italian and Polish. His parents were very strict Roman Catholics and as a young boy was obsessed with his religion and wanted to be a Roman Catholic priest. His mother,name Sant"Anna Maria Battisti, was constantly home sick and returned to Italy she came from a very upper class familly but because she fell in love with a polish soldier was outcast from italy her father also called Carlo was a Count, and she went back to try and make ammends taking both Carlo and his sister back to her native land. After two years they returned back to this country.to a Polish Camp at Hardwick Hall,Derbys,Carlos dad went and brought them all back she never ever went back and died at the tender age of 53 of a broken heart. Carlos father was a coal miner for 35 years and worked in pits in Yorkshire and Derbyshire. first in Shotton colliery in N.WALES and on to Bentley Colliery in Donny from there he ended up in Holmewood pit in Derbyshire then his final days at Pleasley,He died at the age of 63. Carlo was finally brought up in a small coal mining village called Shirebrook.from the age of 7years, He attended Brookfield Junior School and Shirebrook Carter Lane Secondary Boys School and then went on to Chesterfield College of Art where he studied to become an Art Teacher and also took a course on Graphic design.Carlo was born in Wrexham,N.Wales at a polish hospital but would never forget his links with Doncaster and Shirebrook,he could not be born in an english hospital and his parents had to make the daunting journey to the Polish hospital in North Wales.
After leaving college he had jobs in window dressing, interior design and printing and did a short vocational teaching job in Mansfield (evening classes) teaching students design and store advertising but unfortunately Carlo's love of music took the better and in 1972 Carlo turned professional, much to the disappointment of his mother and father.as they wanted for him to pursue an academic carreer, He played guitar in various groups, the Tornados with mark fane, the Fontains and locally 'The Cheaters, 'The Dickins Faces', The Four R's and 'The Threepenny Piece' and in 1973 was 'spotted' by Keith Potger of the New Seekers fame, who was reforming 'The Springfields' later to be called 'Springfield Revival' and was offered the role of lead singer. Carlo reluctantly declined the offer and in 1974 was asked to join the hit recording artists 'Paper Lace' (as guitarist and lead singer). At first he declined the offer but finally was persuaded to join. Hits from the group include 'Billy Don't Be A Hero' and 'The night chicago died', 'The black eyed boys' and 'Hitchin' a Ride '74'. All four songs were worldwide hits. The record company owned by the writers for the band,i.e Mitch Murray and Peter Callender.Carlo has appeared on various pop programmes that were prominent in the 70s, including BBC 'Top of the pops'. He has met many top stars and one of his most memorable moments was appearing with Mama Cass at the London Palladium and The Royal Variety Command Performance.
Carlo left Paper Lace in 1976 to go solo. Voted number 1 male vocalist (1977 - 1978) "National Club Awards by the "Club Mirror". He has won all major trophies on Clubland and T.V appearances include 'Wheeltappers and Shunters Club', 'Seaside Special', 'Stars on Sunday', 'Rising Stars', 'Showcase from Wales' and recently Yorkshires T.V 'Calendar'.and a memorable performance in Hyde Park
He has starred in various radio broadcasts and was previously signed to the "Philips and Mercury" record label, (Phonogram).where he changed his name to Barry Christian and was produced by John Mutt Lange who wrote many hits and married Shania Twain. Carlo has had much success in Australia and Malta, where he has had his own T.V show.His single "Hold my Hand"(Aria)by Carlo Santanna can be downloaded from "Google" and got to number One in Australia and other countries
In 1983 he teamed up with Bill Haslem a Nottingham songwriter and so far they have 'penned' about 850 songs some recorded by other Artists and also "Jingles". A prolific member of the "Performing Rights Society", B.A.S.C.A. M.C.P.S and Equity. sadly Bill died a couple of years ago and carlo has written a couple of songs with Nick Page ex star of "les Mis" and also gives music and vocal lessons and hopes in time to move to teaching full time. Also a keen fund raiser for charity and various organisations.Patron of L.E.A.P.S charity,based in Hull,run by his friend Mally King.

In 1999 CARLO AND HIS FAMILY suffered a terrible tragedy when their son Nathan aged 19 died in a traffic accident,but his memory will live on and they have been told by various mediums that he regurarly sits in the audience, he was a car mechanic but a very talented all round musician and he is so sadly missed.
Carlo has two wonderful daughters Maxine & Nicole, Maxine Santanna is a very established singer and also works with her husband Danny as "Ya Cant Touch This". They are brillient and pack all their venues. Nicole, or Nikky works for Ilkeston Coop TRAVEL, Mansfield.
He has 3 lovely and precious grandchildren, Bailey, Maddison and Giancarlo the youngest grandchild. Nicky is married to Mark Wardle a Derby lad from Rainworth a keen Derby County supporter as is his son Bailey, Carlo has always been a Man United fan since before the Munich air tradegy that cost the lives of two of his favourite footballers,Tommy Taylor and Duncan Edwards; Carlo was offered trials when at school with united and still jokes that he could have been a Busby Babe, ha!ha!
He lives with his lovely Geordie wife,Muriel in the grounds of Rufford Country Park,in the heart of Sherwood Forest. He has one sister, Maria Francesca or Mary as everyone calls her and many nieces and nephews,whom hes very proud of.

It is very sad to add to my letters, the passing away of my son in law,Mark Wardle on Sunday 12th December 2010 who was only 46 years young a blow to all our family and he will be sadly missed,a wonderful man son,uncle,,husband and father and friend. Our hearts go out to my daughter Nicole and my grand children,Bailey and Maddison xxx
